Registration closes the Wednesday after the second regular season game—because nothing says “deadline” like a completely random Wednesday.
Your player will be issued a practice jersey, game jersey, helmet, chin strap, and shoulder pads — in other words, the official “now you really play football” starter pack. All issued gear is covered by a $250 equipment deposit check, which will be returned at the end of the season once everything is turned back in. (Yes, we do count the chin strap. Yes, every year someone forgets.)
Families will need to provide cleats, black padded football pants, and a mouth guard. If it goes in their mouth or runs through the mud, it’s on the shopping list.
Extras like a visor/face shield, back plate, arm sleeves, and other accessories are not required, but they do help your athlete look like they just walked out of a sports commercial. Completely optional — confidence boost not officially guaranteed but strongly suspected.
Sequoyah competes in the GMSAA league, which includes schools from Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, and a few neighboring counties—so you might pass a Buc-ees or a Big Chicken on the way to a game.
GMSAA is organized into Divisions and Regions. Divisions are labeled A, B, and C to group teams with similar levels of competition (think weight classes, not grades). Each Division is then split into Regions, usually 2–4 per Division, depending on how many teams are involved.
Only Region games count toward playoff qualification. Teams will also play games outside their Region and Division during the season—great for experience, bragging rights, and film—but those games don’t impact playoff standings.
Middle school football includes both spring and fall seasons—because one season of football is never enough.
Spring Football
We hold 10 days of spring practice in late April/early May. Practices run Monday–Friday, 6:00–8:00 PM, with a spring scrimmage at the end so the kids can show off what they’ve learned.
Fall Football
Fall practices begin 1–2 weeks before school starts, held Monday–Thursday, 6:00–8:00 PM. After three weeks of practice, teams participate in a Fall Jamboree, followed by one more week of practice and a Fall Scrimmage. The regular season kicks off one week later, when things start to feel very official.
Once the season begins, practices usually shift to Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 6:00–8:00 PM, with JV games on Wednesdays. Regular season games are played on Saturdays, typically with 6th grade first, followed by 7th and then 8th—unless another program decides to mix things up just to keep everyone guessing.
The regular season includes 8 games, with a game at the start of Fall Break and a bye week at the end of Fall Break (a well-earned breather for players and parents alike).
Playoffs begin in November, and the season wraps up before Thanksgiving, so everyone can focus on turkey instead of tackling.
Any Sequoyah team with more than 30 players will also play a JV schedule in addition to the regular schedule—more opportunities for kids to get on the field and have fun!
JV games are played during the week and are designed to give new and developing players valuable game experience in a supportive, competitive setting.
A full JV season of 5–6 games—plenty of chances for players to grow, improve, and show off their skills.
The registration fee for football is $550. We know that’s a meaningful investment, and we’re committed to making sure every player has a safe, well-supported, and positive experience throughout the season (and comes home with great memories… and possibly extra laundry).
We also ask that Middle School families participate in a fundraiser to help offset overall program costs. Participation isn’t mandatory, but it is greatly appreciated and truly helps strengthen the program for all of our athletes.
Middle School football comes with a wide range of behind-the-scenes expenses that keep things running smoothly and safely. These include:
It truly takes a lot of support off the field to give our players a great experience on the field. We’re grateful for every family who helps make the season possible — and for cheering, volunteering, and supporting the team along the way.
Nope. The football fee is the same whether a player starts in the spring or joins during the week of the first regular-season game—no “late fee,” no pro-rated pricing, and sadly, no early-bird discount either.
That said, we highly encourage players to start in the spring to get extra reps, learn the system, and shake off the rust—even if they can’t make it every day. More football, same price… that’s a win.
We are a volunteer-run program, which means football season runs on teamwork, school spirit… and parents who suddenly know how to operate a nacho cheese machine. To keep everything moving smoothly, we ask each family to cover two volunteer shifts during the season.
Volunteer options include working concessions at our Saturday home games, helping at High School Freshman and JV games on Thursdays, or assisting with parking during Friday Night Lights. It’s a great way to meet other families and witness, firsthand, how urgently someone can need a hot chocolate in 42-degree weather.
Being the game day announcer on Saturdays or working the chains does not count toward volunteer shifts — but those roles do come with excellent field views and the ability to look extremely official, so we still appreciate those volunteers just as much.
To help make sure all spots are covered, we’ll collect a $150 check before equipment is issued to your player. Think of it as a friendly little “we know you’re good for it” deposit. If you complete your two shifts, your check will be returned at the end of the season, untouched and ready to retire. If volunteering isn’t in the cards this year, no worries — we’ll cash the check and hire someone else to rock the apron or play frogger with cars in the parking lot.
However you choose to contribute, it truly helps make the season possible for all of our athletes — and we appreciate you being part of the team behind the team.
Yes! We understand that many athletes play multiple sports, and we fully encourage it (future scholarships don’t earn themselves). Our simple rule is that the sport currently in season takes priority.
For example, if your player has a conflict with baseball during spring football, they should be at baseball. During the fall season, if there’s a conflict with another sport like water polo, then football takes priority. We promise not to make them choose between pads and a swim cap… we’ll just tell you where they should be.
Yes — we love our sponsors! We offer sponsorship packages at multiple levels to fit a variety of needs and budgets. Full details can be found on the high school football website at Sponsors - Sequoyah Chiefs Football.
