This is a great — and very common — question.
Several Cherokee County schools have chosen to join the CFL (Cobb Football League), a youth football league that includes teams from Cobb, Paulding, and Fulton Counties, as well as programs from the cities of Roswell, Marietta, Cartersville, and now Cherokee County.
Meanwhile, River Ridge and Sequoyah High Schools have chosen to remain in CYFA, which is now partnered with Forsyth County Parks & Recreation and North Cobb Football. In the Forsyth league, teams are organized by park rather than by school. Each park typically fields on average two teams per grade level, and there are currently three parks in that league.
The decision about which league to join was different for each high school and Sequoyah based theirs on several important factors, including:
Because each school community has different needs and priorities, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
What is consistent across Cherokee County is this:
All high schools are now operating their own K–5th youth football programs. The shared goal is to create stronger player development, better alignment with high school programs, and an overall improved experience for local families.

Registration opens on 3/15. Registration for youth cheer will be through CYFA at www.cyfa.org. Registration for youth football will be through this website. You can click the "Register Now" button on the K-5th Football page.
Registration for youth cheer will close on 5/31. Registration for youth football will close on 7/1.
Your player will be issued a game jersey, helmet, chin strap, and shoulder pads — also known as the official “okay, this just got real” starter pack.
All issued gear is covered by a $250 equipment deposit check, returned at the end of the season once everything is turned back in. And yes… we do count the chin strap. Every. Single. Year.
Families will need to provide cleats, black padded football pants, and a mouth guard. If it goes on their feet, in their mouth, or ends up covered in mud, it’s on your shopping list.
The Sequoyah Youth program will play teams from the River Ridge, Forsyth County Parks and Rec, North Cobb and the CYFA Wildcats.
Registration opens March 15 — go ahead and set the reminder now.
Practices begin the week of July 20 for football and July 27 for Cheer. The Jamboree on August 15 is our warm-up act, and August 22 is opening night.
We’ll take breaks on September 5, September 26, and October 31. (Yes, you can trick-or-treat in peace.)
Playoffs kick off November 7, and Championship games wrap it all up on November 14 — just in time to start talking about next season.
The cost for football for the 2026 season is $350, which covers everything needed to practice and compete throughout the season.
For a full breakdown of what’s included (and what will end up in your online shopping cart), please see the FAQ titled “What Equipment is Provided and What Do I Need to Buy?”
Each family is also required to complete one volunteer shift as part of our Family Contribution Policy — because it takes a team on the field… and a few MVPs behind the scenes.
We’re a volunteer-run program, and to keep everything running smoothly, we ask each K-5th grade family to cover one volunteer shift during the season — just enough to earn your official Behind-the-Scenes MVP badge of honor.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- Working concessions at our Saturday home games
- Helping out at High School Freshman and JV games on Thursdays
- Assisting with parking during Friday Night Lights (yes, the glowing wands are powerful)
It’s a great way to support the team, meet other families, and witness firsthand just how many nachos a stadium can go through in a single quarter.
Important note:
Being the Saturday game announcer or working the chains does not count toward volunteer shifts — those fall under the category of “Cool Jobs With Field Access.” Highly respected. Slightly envied. Still appreciated… just not shift-credit material.
Thanks for being part of what makes this program awesome — we truly couldn’t do it without you!
Yes — we support multi-sport athletes. Competing year-round builds tough, well-rounded players.
But here’s the rule: when it’s football season, football comes first.
If there’s a conflict with another sport like baseball, football takes priority. In-season commitment matters, and the team is counting on every player to show up ready to work.
Yes — we love our sponsors! We offer sponsorship packages at multiple levels to fit a variety of needs and budgets. Full details can be found on the high school football website at Sponsors - Sequoyah Chiefs Football.
